Cloud Garbage Collection

Summary:

Cloud storage is a reliable and cost effective storage solution used by modern enterprise environments to back up large amounts of data. To increase the cost efficiency of cloud storage, fast and effective removal of unused data, or garbage collection is vitally important. Working with Dell EMC, we wrote a garbage collection system that runs in a distributed fashion on Amazon Web Services. Using AWS Lambda and AWS SQS (a queue system) we split our garbage collection algorithm across multiple nodes. We then created a testing framework that allowed us to benchmark several aspects of our garbage collection process. From those results we could easily find where our garbage collection process excelled.
